Overview

We continue our focus on planning instruction tonight by adding another essential element: assessment. After making up an assessment item of our own, we will talk about what teachers should consider when planning instruction and assessment. We'll use this information to evaluate and redesign assessment items that address specific learning goals in particular ways.

Learning Goals

Students should be able to
  • describe the difference between summative & formative assessment.
  • critique assessments with respect to necessity, sufficiency, and developmental appropriateness.
  • design & describe the process of writing assessments aligned with learning goals.
